Enters in Triumph

6 The two disciples did as Jesus commanded. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt to him and threw their garments over the colt, and he sat on it.

8 Most of the crowd spread their garments on the road ahead of him, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 Jesus was in the center of the procession, and the people all around him were shouting,  “Praise God for the Son of David! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Praise God in highest heaven!”

10 The entire city of Jerusalem was in an uproar as he entered. “Who is this?” they asked.11 And the crowds replied, “It’s Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Matthew 21:6-10

Experts label this passage as the “triumphal entry.”

It looked like triumph.

It was actually a walk to death.

Jesus would die just outside the city a few hours later.

This passage is also clear witness to human fickleness.

The crowd praised Jesus on a donkey.

The next day before Pilate they shouted “crucify Him!”

We are unreliable, faithless and changeable, like that crowd.

But Jesus is the same.

Yesterday, today, forever.

He knew He would suffer that day.

He continued.

He knew He would die.

He allowed it.

Eternally more than a prophet…

the Savior forever…

worthy of praise.

15 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.
He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,
16 for through him God created everything
in the heavenly realms and on earth.
He made the things we can see
and the things we can’t see—
such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world.
Everything was created through him and for him.
17 He existed before anything else,
and he holds all creation together.

Colossians 1:15-17
