15 So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.

Ecclesiastes 8:15

Be Glad

Remember the last time someone asked you, “How’s it going?” Perhaps the question is “How has your day been?” There are many other ways we ask each other how they are doing. I know. Many times the question is the way we greet one another. Often, there is little interest in how we are really doing. It’s just the way we greet each other…you know: “How you doin’ today?”

But, let’s go a little further. In reality, the question could be eliminated entirely. Why? You read the verse of scripture above. Wise Solomon provided it…under God’s instruction. What is it? Eat, drink and be glad. Yes, the old saying is be merry. We say that at Christmas these days. Let’s stick with glad.

Be glad. Repeat, be glad.

Go deeper with me. What might be the reason for gladness-for everyone? Here’s the quick answer: God provides. Next, if we fall short of food or drink…God remains in control. Even if our very life is at risk. God is over all things. It’s called sovereign. But King Solomon was referring to every day life when he said “eat, drink and be glad.”

Why can you and I be glad? This verse from the Bible explains the source for all human gladness and joy:

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; Psalm 24:1

You and I belong to God. God loves the world. He’s got each of your days in HIS control…food, drink…and gladness.

One more time: BE GLAD.

Be glad. If you’ve ever watched hummingbirds you may believe they were made for human enjoyment. Gladness.
